car salesmen ...

we spent the entire day with car salesmen ...

we threw our kids in the car (huge mistake) ... and drove into Sacramento ... we've spent the last 9 hours car shopping all over the city ...

the Honda Pilot ...
the Hyundai Entourage ...
the Kia Borrego ...
the Toyota Sienna ...

actually, it's the first time in 10 years we've shopped for a car ... punch me in the neck ... anyways, we almost bought 19 different cars ... so many options ... the sun roof, DVD players, 6 disc changers, electric windows, tinted windows, hydraulics ... pimped out mini-vans ... fortunately, we fought the urge to cave in ...

tomorrow, we set out again into the land of family cars ... I think we'll leave the kids with my parents ...

if you do anything DO NOT BUY A BRAND NEW CAR. it won't be worth what you paid for it the minute you drive it off the lot and you'll be throwing money down the toilet (essentially). most car manufacturers have transferable warranties...so check out a used honda pilot or hyundai. hyundai has a 10year 100,000 mile warranty...so you'll save a ton of money on a certified used one. and, regardless of the condition of your trade-in they probably will take it. go in, find a used car that you like and tell them you want that car...but you need a fair price for your trade-in. they won't want you to leave, then you're in control. seriously. good luck :)

Gotta second JoshuaP's motion man. The immediate depreciation and the following feces you face when dealing w/the dealership is near-stroke inducing..however...

CarMax, (Roseville, Ca) Has good cars at decent prices. You can also purchase coverage for breakdowns, etc, that can be used at a variety of locations, not just CarMax or a dealership. You can also find GREAT deals online! Now, if you know the car you want and a New car is absolutely what you want, I'd suggest a Samsclub/Costco purchase. They have a vehicle purchase program and its COOOL when the car transporter pulls up and drops off you're brand new 97 Celica in the neighborhood and EVERYONE comes to see just how PIMP you are...lol. It saves a bunch o cash and they negotiate for the coverages on your behalf w/their buying power...

Nathan,

Buy a salvaged car like you always do. I know the Edwardson schemes. I'm suprised you guys are Norwegian. Seems more like a Jewish trait you possess. Perhaps that is the mystery behind the floater anointing. Blessings!!

I saw a used Honda Pilot at Valley Auto on Eureka Way this week and thought of you guys before I even read your blog. Too funny. Stick with Honda, not Hyundai. UGH!

actually, a used bmw with 150,000 miles on it is still a better car than anything the US is making imo. but you'd have to live with the fact that tony campolo would hate you and doubt you could even be a christian for having a bmw...

We took all three kids to buy our car two years ago, it was the longest and worst day of our life. Our kids TORE UP that dealership with tantrums, getting into things, whatever, what are kids supposed to do for three hours? After some research, we found the used pilots were almost the same price as new which was disappointing, so we bought new...

actually, high maintenance costs for bmw's is a misnomer. of course, if you are a moron you take your bmw to a dealer...but if you can find a reputable shop (i have 3 in my area that i use for different jobs) then your costs can be low, as is the case with the cars we have had. if you take care of a car it won't be a money pit.

my last bmw (a 1997 528i) had 226,000 miles on it when i traded it in. the ONLY work i had done on it was this:

routine oil changes/filters/etc...

rear drivers side window regulator.

cylinder coil for cylinder #5.

3 annual tune-ups.

new tires.

if you buy a pre-owned car that has been properly maintained then you won't be entering into a deal that is a money pit. buying a new car...having a $200-$500 payment every month is a real waste of money. the car isn't worth what you paid for it. you are owning the car for around 90% of it's depreciation if you buy it new and keep it for 4 years...and you probably won't even have it even close to being paid off in 4 years.

i'll take a 1989 bmw 735i...probably the greatest sedan ever made mechanically speaking...over ANYTHING chrysler makes today. easy. and i could buy an awesome 1989 735i with 150,000 miles on it for $39000 (and not have a car payment or be dealing with depreciation or sky high insurance) that would easily give me another 200,000+ miles. it isn't what the odometer reads...that doesn't mean anything. get my drift? i come from a different school my friend...where we don't buy new cars.

that was an awesome 735i for $3,900

I'm not specifically talking new or used. I'm simply saying BMW doesn't lead over American made. Especially when we're talking dollar amount and reliability

Also, vehicles don't depreciate half their value the second they are sold or any figure significantly lower for that matter. Statements as such are lies created by used car salesmen.
